Let's be upfront, I'm not a big institutional explorer. I'm not gonna bust a nut over a wheelchair or grind against a gurney. I don't get mad pumped over asylums and coupled with the fact they seem to be the most popular of explorable of locations turns me off a little. That said from time to time something pops up that really grabs my interest. Graylingwell is about as generic as asylums come but Gwell has a special allure - it's essentially unexplored.

When I say unexplored I don't mean noone has never been inside. I've seen well known explorers who couldn't find a way in settle for a tour, and others claiming they've explored it when it appears they only got into a couple of rooms. If you set yourself such low standards then I guess a couple of rooms might be enough for their checklist but that just doesn't satisfy me.

A good puzzle is a gift, a challenge a blessing and that's the attitude we packed for Gwell. We found a couple of unlocked windows but all led into little rooms with locked doors. Instead of opting for PIRs it seems the authorities of this partially active asylum chose to go with 3 inch screws in the windows and locking all the interior doors. An hour of searching and sneaking gave us a window into a room with an unlocked door. Jackpot, we had a corridor!

From here with some crafty tactics we entered most of the building save for the active sections, the water tower, admin, chapel and the morgue so there is still much to do. The highlight of the site for us was the projection booth and the theatre. A few generic asylum pics, it didn't offer up too much in terms of eye candy either. The day was about the challenge of access and solving a puzzle that noone else had, pimping aint easy but it sure is fun.

It's a bit plain as far as asylums go, mostly stripped and barren. The projector room is the obvious exception. Real satisfaction came from being able to crack something that noone else could. It was a puzzle, a riddle, a physical cipher waiting for someone to come along and push all the right buttons in the rights places. Feels good to know a bunch of drainers can show up the hardcore abandonment heads at their own game ;) First Lots Road, now Graylingwell. The next one will be a big 'un.
